Embarking on the renovation of Thistledome House into a wedding venue was a challenging endeavor that we tackled head-on. We quickly realized the extent of the task at hand once we were fully immersed in the project. Painting the 12' ceilings ourselves presented a formidable challenge, especially considering the necessary plaster and drywall repairs beforehand. Additionally, the exterior painting demanded a 40' lift rental for a month, involving extensive scraping and wood replacement. Throughout it all, our contractor delivered exceptional workmanship, ensuring the successful transformation of the property.
The beautifully transformed porches underwent wood plank replacements, column repairs, banisters, and spindle replacements. Utilizing historically accurate materials on a historic house can be a costly endeavor, sometimes necessitating the fabrication or sourcing of high-quality replicas. While this may extend the project timeline, the results are well worth it. Many columns were carefully removed, refinished, and reinstalled. The widow's peak balcony porch was completely reconstructed, with the added bonus of incorporating original spindles from the lower porches stored on the property. This thoughtful touch significantly enhanced the overall grandeur of the project.
Let's delve into the brick details of this property. It boasts 4 chimneys, with 3 meticulously rebuilt to their original specifications. Originally designed for coal burning, these chimneys now stand as historical artifacts, no longer in use for heating the house in modern times. Following the restoration, custom caps were crafted to seal off the chimney tops, preventing any unwanted critters from entering the house. The result is an impressive restoration that truly stands out.
The front brick sidewalk leading to the stunning federal doors had settled and buckled over time. It was imperative to address this issue. By widening the walkway and incorporating both the existing bricks and those extra from the chimney, we were able to achieve a seamless historical solution. The impeccable result of the sidewalk renovation now prompted us to turn our attention to the back walkway. But we didn't stop there. The Thistledome House calls for even more grandeur, hence the creation of a magnificent brick courtyard.
Considerable thought was given to the historical significance and contemporary needs of the Bride and Groom during the renovation of this venue. Thistledome House is designed to craft enduring memories of this significant day, meticulously addressing aspects from the exterior to the interior. We invite you to discover our exceptional space and envision it as the ideal backdrop for your wedding celebration.
